After ending Atletico’s run, Barcelona is back in title contention.

Barcelona overcame a slump and the hottest team in Spain to secure a crucial victory for their title prospects and allay fears of a late collapse.

Sunday’s 1-0 victory kept Barcelona on pace for their first Spanish league title in four years, snapping a three-game losing streak and snapping Atletico Madrid’s 13-game unbeaten streak, respectively.

The victory at home restored the team’s 11-point advantage over Real Madrid with eight rounds remaining.

The victory also ended Atletico’s six-game winning streak, allowing Madrid to gain distance in the race for second place.

Saturday, with the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals in mind, Madrid defeated Celta Vigo 2-0 at home.

In the 44th minute at Camp Nou, Ferran Torres scored the game-winning goal with a well-placed low shot just inside the penalty area to resolve Barcelona’s recent problems heading into the final stretch.

After being humiliated at home by Madrid 4-0 in the Copa del Rey semifinals, they hadn’t scored in three consecutive games and were held scoreless by Girona and Getafe in the league.

Torres stated, “We had to win no matter what, as it was a crucial match for our league title hopes.”

It was difficult to defeat a team that had not lost in 13 matches and was one of the strongest teams of the season.

It was Barcelona’s 23rd clean sheet in the league since they last claimed the title in 2019. This season, they have allowed only nine goals in thirty league matches.

Atletico, in third place and with the second-best defense (22 goals conceded), is five points behind Madrid.

It was Barcelona’s third consecutive victory over Diego Simeone’s squad, which had not defeated the Catalan club since 2021.

“They deserved the victory because they were more efficient,” said Simeone. We had opportunities but failed to take advantage of them.

Atletico, the champions of 2021, threatened first with a strike off the crossbar by Antoine Griezmann three minutes into the match, but that was the closest they came.

Elsewhere, Valencia’s fight against relegation advanced with a 2-0 victory at last-place Elche.

The result halted Valencia’s 10-match league winless streak on the road, during which they had lost eight consecutive matches.

Valencia remained in 18th place with the same number of points as Almeria in 17th, the first team above the relegation zone, whereas Elche are 17 points from safety.
