Arsenal face new saliba challenge as ‘three main clubs’ watch transfer swoop

Three significant clubs are reportedly preparing a transfer bid for William Saliba, making it more difficult for Arsenal to convince him to sign a new long-term contract.

Saliba, 22 years old, has been in negotiations for a new contract for the majority of the current season, with his current deal due to expire in less than a year.

Arsenal are in the process of extending the contracts of a number of crucial players, with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale becoming the most recent star to commit to the Gunners on Thursday.

But highly-rated central defender Saliba, whose March injury played a crucial role in the collapse of Arsenal’s Premier League title bid, remains on the contract he signed in 2019 after joining for £27 million from Saint-Étienne as an adolescent. Now, after only one full season with the Gunners, the 22-year-old’s future is in jeopardy.

Although Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is confident that Saliba will sign an extension, RMC Sport in the defender’s native France reports that three unnamed significant clubs are interested in a move. Last year, it became known that European champions Real Madrid were interested in acquiring his services, while Italian powerhouses AC Milan also expressed interest, although the absence of Champions League football makes the latter’s chances remote.

In January, after the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over North London rivals Tottenham, Saliba stated that he was “so happy” to play for the club, adding, “The club is in contact with my agent and me.” My only option is to concentrate on football.”

Technical director Edu has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to secure Saliba’s future at the Emirates, with Arteta affirming this month: “We want to retain our top talent. Particularly the players who merit recognition. I believe he has been phenomenal since returning from his loan period, and we definitely want to reward him.

Since the middle of March, William Saliba has been sidelined with an injury.
“We will find an appropriate time to do that. Obviously, Edu and the board are on top of every new contract negotiation, and we are doing everything possible to complete these negotiations at the optimal time. The relationship and communication are superb. I believe that timing is crucial. “Nothing more”

The France international is not anticipated to return to competitive action until the beginning of the following season. After spending two years on loan, Saliba has been a revelation for Arsenal and has formed an imperious partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes through the first two-thirds of the season.

But when Saliba suffered a back injury during the Gunners’ Europa League quarterfinal loss to Sporting Lisbon in mid-March, Arteta and co.’s prospects of winning the English championship for the first time in 19 years were dashed. Fans expect that the Frenchman will be available to compete again next season.
