Arsenal find perfect Jurrien Timber replacement after outstanding international showing

Due to Jurrien Timber’s injury, Arsenal was unable to acquire a defender in the final few weeks of the transfer window. Takehiro Tomiyasu, however, could have been the solution to Mikel Arteta’s problems all along.

Timber was widely regarded as a top acquisition when he was acquired by the Gunners from Ajax in July. A £38million deal appeared to be a snip following his first couple of outings for his new club.

After playing predominantly at right-back or center-back for Ajax, he began his career in north London at left-back, demonstrating his versatility.

On his Premier League debut, he incurred an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, which has ruled him out for the majority of the season.

Arsenal examined their transfer market options but was unable to find a short-term solution that met their requirements. They still permitted Rob Holding to join Crystal Palace on a permanent basis.

This left Arteta with only six senior defenders until at least January. This season’s addition of Champions League football will place additional strain on players like William Saliba and Ben White, who are already overworked.

Arsenal will have to cross their fingers and hope they do not sustain any additional significant injuries at the back. However, Tomiyasu has a player who can play any position.

Like Timber, he is versatile in the backline. During Tomiyasu’s early years with Arsenal, he was rarely utilized as a central defender, and when he was, it was primarily in a back-three.

Tomiyasu was a fan favorite at right-back for Arsenal, but he lost that position to White at the outset of last season due to injury. Since then, he has had to play a supporting role, but he could prove to be a valuable squad member.

In Timber’s absence, he has operated at left-back so far this season. Saturday’s performance for Japan against Germany was a timely reminder that he can also play centrally.

Tomiyasu dominated in Wolfsburg as Japan defeated Germany 4-1 in an international friendly. Alongside Kou Itakura, the 24-year-old performed admirably against Germany’s attacking prowess while playing in the back four.

If Saliba, White, and Gabriel remain healthy, Tomiyasu will rarely play as a central defender. The preponderance of his club time will be spent at fullback.

However, Arsenal’s pursuit of domestic and continental success necessitates the use of multiple players. Tomiyasu has demonstrated to Arteta that he is capable of filling the vacuum left by Timber’s absence.
