The repercussions of Folarin Balogun’s decision to represent the USMNT instead of England could extend far beyond Arsenal.
Balogun has decided to make himself available to the United States of America as opposed to England, where he grew up, or Nigeria, for which he is eligible based on his parents’ citizenship.
The native of New York, who excelled on loan at Reims in the French Ligue 1 last season, has another decision to make regarding his club future.
Balogun has scored 20 goals for Reims in his breakout season, but a first-team place with Mikel Arteta’s first team next season is unlikely, so a departure could be on the horizon.
German club RB Leipzig is rumored to be interested in signing England Under-21 international Balogun after his season in France.
The Gunners stand to earn a substantial profit on Balogun’s move to France.
The Gunners can legitimately demand a transfer fee in excess of £20 million for Balogun, who is unlikely to surpass Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, or Eddie Nketiah in Arteta’s starting lineup.
Balogun’s decision to compete for the USMNT may cause Arsenal to reconsider selling the player.
Arsenal are not bound by Balogun’s contract, as it expires in 2025; however, it would be prudent to contemplate selling while his market value is high.
