Arsenal still has an opportunity to land dream duo as Chelsea are ‘not close’ to signing top target

Arsenal still has the opportunity to construct Mikel Arteta’s ideal midfield by acquiring Moises Caicedo from Brighton this summer.

The Ecuadorian international appeared destined to join Chelsea this summer, but negotiations are ‘not close’ with the Stamford Bridge club.

Arteta made it obvious that he wanted to continue strengthening his squad in order to close the gap with Manchester City following their successful 2022/23 season. The Spaniard prioritized a midfield overhaul, allowing Granit Xhaka to depart and putting a number of players on the market.

Saudi clubs are circling Ghana international Thomas Partey in an attempt to sign him. Caicedo is still revered by Arsenal, who could therefore add another top-tier midfielder to their roster.

Prior to this summer, Arteta intended to sign both the Brighton star and Declan Rice, but the cost was prohibitive and they opted for Rice, who recently joined the club for £105 million.

The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea are “not close” to matching Brighton’s £100 million asking price for Caicedo. Therefore, the Gunners have a good chance of signing the “dream duo.”

The Blues and Brighton have been in negotiations for weeks, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side appears reluctant to welcome another £100 million signing after paying a comparable amount for Enzo Fernandez in January.

The Seagulls are adamant that they will not settle for a lesser number for their No. 25 and have now included Caicedo in their preseason preparations; their squad is scheduled to depart for the United States on Monday.

Some reports speculate that Arsenal will demand at least £30 million for the services of the former Atletico Madrid sensation, Partey. If the Gunners return to the race, a figure in that range would go a long way toward securing Caicedo, though they may need to repair their strained relationship with Brighton in order to reach an agreement.

In January, Arsenal attempted to acquire the midfielder from Brighton, but Brighton rejected their proposals in favor of a summer transfer. Arteta’s side persisted throughout the month, with several ‘derisory’ proposals in the region of £70 million causing annoyance within the Seagulls’ camp; however, bridges can be rebuilt with a successful transaction.

The midfield trio of Rice, Caicedo, and Martin Odegaard would be widely regarded as one of the best in Europe, and the team at the Emirates Stadium will believe that the trio is the ideal foundation for both short- and long-term success.
