In recent days, it appeared that FC Porto would acquire midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Barcelona during the current transfer window.

Xavi Hernandez informed the 21-year-old that his role would be extremely limited if he remained with the club. As a result, another exit was being contemplated, either on loan or permanently (with a repurchase option).

Moreover, it appeared that Porto could be Nico’s next destination, as negotiations were reportedly at an advanced stage.

The midfielder’s transfer to the Portuguese champions has been halted, according to a recent report from Gerard Romero, after he received an attractive offer from a club in La Liga.

Romero reported that Nico had reached an agreement with Porto and that everything was in place for him to complete the transfer. A concrete proposal from a Spanish first-division team, however, has halted all negotiations.

Nico will therefore travel to the United States for Barcelona’s preseason camp in the hopes of gaining playing time that will help him regain form and increase his market value, as his transfer to Porto has stalled.

The 21-year-old La Masia graduate spent the previous season on loan at Valencia, where he endured an injury-plagued campaign.

Nico no longer has a place in Xavi’s plans at Barcelona, given the overwhelming number of options available to the manager.

The adolescent would be positioned behind Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Ilkay Gundogan, and Oriol Romeu and would not play regularly. As such, it makes sense for Nico to leave on loan, and a transfer to Porto, which offers Champions League football, would have been advantageous.

Before a decision is made regarding the Spaniard’s future, the operation has been halted and he will now embark on the preseason tour with the Barcelona squad.
