Chelsea must accept massive transfer error and re-sign academy star: news

Chelsea has been forced to pursue a former player, but they may have to pay more than three times what they paid for him previously.

Chelsea is renowned for producing high-quality players from their youth academy and selling them to other clubs in England and abroad, but they may soon acknowledge that they made a mistake by selling one of them.

Products for young adults Chelsea has already sold Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek this summer, joining a number of former Blues who have left the club.

Moises Caicedo remains Mauricio Pochettino’s top priority in midfield, but Wesley Fofana’s latest knee injury has forced Chelsea to resolve their central defensive situation.

Chelsea only have Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, and Trevoh Chalobah at center-back due to the sale of Kalidou Koulibaly, and Pochettino wants more options. Harry Maguire of Manchester United has been rumored but appears unlikely.

The Guardian reports that Chelsea may instead attempt to bring back Marc Guehi, a former academy product. Two years ago, Chelsea sold Guehi to Crystal Palace for £18 million, but he has since flourished in south London, earning an England call-up and being named Palace captain multiple times.

The 23-year-old has attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur over the past year, but The Guardian reports that Chelsea has Guehi at the top of their list if they elect to replace the injured Fofana.

Before being transferred permanently, Guehi appeared in only two EFL Cup games for Chelsea as a professional, spending the majority of his time in the U23 squad or on loan at Swansea.

Guehi is now valued at £30 million on Transfermarkt, indicating that Chelsea made an error in the market. Guehi still has three years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, so it is probable that Palace will demand a much higher price.

Indeed, reports indicate that Palace desires at least £50 million for the England international, with £60 million frequently mentioned. Caicedo is anticipated to cost in the region of £80 million, so it remains to be seen whether the Chelsea hierarchy will be prepared to re-sign a former academy player for such a high fee.
