Erik ten Hag proves ‘clause’ in Man Utd player’s deal that will let him exit in January.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Sergio Reguilon’s contract contains a ‘break provision’ that allows him to return to Tottenham in January.

Ten Hag’s chosen left-backs, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, were both injured when the Spanish player joined Manchester United on loan in September. Reguilon has made 10 appearances for the club despite his own injury and illness concerns.

Reguilon’s future at Old Trafford is questionable, however, with Shaw back in action and Malacia nearing full fitness. Ten Hag revealed before their recent defeat to Bournemouth that the former Real Madrid player’s future was uncertain

“We have to make a final decision on Reguilon,” he told reporters. However, the Spurs are also involved in that discussion.” Reguilon broke into Real Madrid’s senior team in 2018, but after only 14 La Liga games, he was loaned to Sevilla the next season.

He won the Europa League there before moving to north London in September 2020 to play for Jose Mourinho. However, he was back on loan in Spain two years later, this time with Atletico Madrid. He returned in the summer, only to join United, an agreement that may now be terminated.

Ten Hag is now considering many exit options for January. Following his first-team exile, Jadon Sancho is expected to leave the club, while Rafael Varane and Donny van de Beek may also leave.
