Marcus Rashford has become the first Manchester United player in a decade to score 30 goals in a single season. Erik ten Hag has advised Rashford to strive for 40 goals the following year.

Rashford’s goal against Chelsea on Thursday made him the first United player to do so since Robin van Persie in the last title-winning season. It is a significant improvement from the five goals he scored all of last season, but Ten Hag is already urging Rashford to score even more.

The academy graduate is one of the success stories of the Ten Hag era, having fallen out of favor towards the close of last season under Ralf Rangnick.

The 25-year-old is now better than ever and a significant threat for United on the left wing or as a central striker, but Ten Hag insists there is still more to come from him.

“His game has a great deal of potential for improvement. “I am certain he can score even more goals,” he said.
“If you consider the last ten games, he has not scored many goals. I estimate two or three, so he can certainly progress. From what he did last season to his return this season, I am pleased.

“We aided him in every way we could, from the way we played to his mental disposition. We are pleased, but he must be pushed further. I believe he is capable of scoring forty goals per season. So this is the next phase for him.”

This is a tantalizing prospect for United fans, particularly as Ten Hag continues to press for the signing of a striker this summer.

The Dutchman has set his sights on Harry Kane and is aware that his team must score more goals in order to surpass the 57 goals they scored last season.

“Across the team, we require more scoring abilities. You can’t be dependent on one. However, it can also come from this team, but we require more scoring ability,” he said.
