Former Manchester United manager makes joke after Pep Guardiola wins medal named after him.
Sir Alex Ferguson joked that it felt’sore’ to pass over the Manager of the Year award named after him to Pep Guardiola. Guardiola is the current recipient of the accolade.
After leading Manchester City to their third consecutive victory in the Premier League title race, the club’s manager was honored with the LMA Manager of the Year award for the third time earlier this week.
The last several seasons have seen Guardiola run roughshod over the Premier League, and he has a real shot at following in the footsteps of Sir Alex Ferguson by winning all three major trophies this season.
This coming weekend, City will play Manchester United in the final of the FA Cup. The following week, they will play Inter Milan in the final of the Champions League.
If City wins either of these games, they will be one step closer to winning both titles. If they are successful, he will have accomplished something with an English club that only Sir Alex Ferguson has done before.
To add insult to injury for United supporters, the league’s most valuable player trophy that Pep Guardiola won this week is actually titled in his honor as a tribute to the accomplishments he achieved at Old Trafford.
In making the announcement that Guardiola had won, he referred to him as “Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola. It hurts a lot, doesn’t it? It certainly hurts a lot. However, it is richly merited.
“He’s built a squad that becomes better with each passing season. When you win three titles in a row, that tells you everything you need to know. I believe that their performances in the latter portion of the game, when it truly matters something, were of a top caliber.”
When speaking after receiving the award, Guardiola complimented his other candidates and gave the impression that he believed another person may have taken home the prize instead of him.
“To begin, I’d like to discuss it with the other nominees for this award. This season, each and every one of them has done an outstanding job.
This trophy is typically not given out based on the quality of the manager, but rather on the accomplishments of the team.
“I am a part of a fantastic football club, and I could not be here without all of the support that I have received throughout my time here.
