Mauricio Pochettino defended Mykhailo Mudryk after the Chelsea attacker failed to make a significant impression in Sunday’s loss to West Ham United.

The 22-year-old, who cost Chelsea up to £88million in the January transfer window, replaced the injured Carney Chukwuemeka at the halftime break. Prior to Mudryk’s substitution, the Blues had dominated and controlled the Hammers, but the score was 1-1.

The Ukraine international was substituted in at No. 10 after Nicolas Jackson. We are not accustomed to seeing Mudryk in this position, as the assailant typically operates on the left side. However, he was moved back to the wing shortly into the second half after failing to create an impression in the position.

Chelsea’s offensive performance at the London Stadium was extremely disheartening, as he had two excellent scoring opportunities that he failed to convert. Mudryk did well to move the ball to his right foot, and it appeared that he was going to smash it past Alphonse Areola, but regrettably he lost his footing and fell to the ground.

A second time, Raheem Sterling clipped the ball to the far post and found Mudryk, but the Ukrainian’s errant volley prompted West Ham supporters to applaud and ridicule the winger. There was a moment when some Chelsea supporters lost tolerance with Mudryk.

A Reddit user stated, “I believe I’ve lost my forbearance with him. I will continue to cheer for his success, but I can no longer justify this purchase. While another commented, “He will be transferred out next season (most likely on loan) if he does not improve immediately. Pochettino was correct not to start him in either game, and I don’t believe he should have been brought on as a substitute.”

After being acquired during the January transfer window, Mudryk was saddled with enormous expectations. His brief appearance in January’s goalless draw at Anfield left many Chelsea fans in amazement of his ability.

Since then, however, the aggressor in Ukraine has never been the same. After 19 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, he has yet to score in a competitive match.

Mauricio Pochettino has substituted Mudryk in both of Chelsea’s season-opening matches. Mudryk was substituted earlier than intended due to Chukwuemeka’s injury, but he was unable to demonstrate his offensive prowess in the final third.

However, Pochettino has come to his winger’s defense. The Argentine head coach believes the former Shakhtar Donetsk attacker needs more time to adjust before he can reach his full potential in a Chelsea uniform.

“He played for 45 minutes today.” After the loss, Pochettino stated to the press, “I believe he is a young player in whom we must place our trust and develop these relationships with us and the team.” It’s only a matter of time before he finds a means to settle in better with the team and perform to our standards.

Although he did not perform particularly well against West Ham, Mudryk could possibly start against Luton Town later this week.
With Chukwuemeka set to miss some time after exiting the London Stadium on crutches on Sunday evening and Christopher Nkunku ruled out for several months, Chelsea’s attacking options are limited.

According to Chelsea.football the club will resume its transfer market pursuit of another forward player this week, with the Blues seeking a right winger who can also play in the middle. Mudryk, however, has a legitimate opportunity of starting against Luton on Friday night at Stamford Bridge.
