‘Glad to join’: world superstar would have been happy to sign for Manchester City this summer

Sam Lee, a journalist, asserts that Declan Rice would have been delighted to join Manchester City this summer if the transfer had occurred.

Arsenal broke the British transfer record last week when they paid £105 million to acquire Rice from West Ham, but only after City withdrew from the contest.

City’s offer of £80 million + £10 million in add-ons was rejected by the London club, and their interest in the England international ended when West Ham refused to reduce their asking price.

Despite contrary rumors, City’s interest in Rice was genuine, and he was one of the club’s top transfer targets.

Rice convinced by crucial factor
Sam Lee, a correspondent for Manchester City, revealed on The Athletic Football Podcast that Rice would have been delighted to sign with City despite his decision to join Arsenal.

“Rice was content to join City, but he was overjoyed to join Arsenal, and that was the deciding factor,” Lee said.

“Arsenal’s intentions to sign Rice date back to before the World Cup, and that kind of dedication ultimately had a significant impact.”

Lee also clarified that City’s attempt to acquire Rice was genuine and not part of some elaborate plot to harm Arsenal, as some have suggested.

“City were extremely intent. Guardiola left them with three names prior to his vacation: Kovacic, Josko Gvardol, and Rice,” he said.

“City’s interest in Rice was without a doubt sincere. There were rumors that they were attempting to acquire him to prevent Arsenal from fortifying, which was not the case. They were not attempting to increase the price or anything similar.”

The city’s pursuit of ‘world-class’ Rice’s interest appears to have been in a specific player, not in midfielders in general.

As a result, they will not pursue any other athlete besides Rice.

City has already replaced Ilkay Gundogan with Mateo Kovacic and will reportedly increase their efforts to retain Bernardo Silva at the club.
