Manchester United will repeat the acquisitions of Alexis Sanchez and Harry Maguire if they secure a season-long loan for Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. Maguire and Sanchez are widely regarded as two of the club’s worst signings, but both possessed a glimmer of promise.

Sanchez’s arrival at Old Trafford was accompanied by a barrage of hype, mirroring Robin van Persie’s move from Arsenal to their acrimonious Premier League rivals.

A direct trade with Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave the impression of a lucrative no-cost transfer, but this was far from the truth.

Sanchez performed poorly during his 18-month tenure at United, netting only five goals despite earning a staggering £505,000 per week.

It has earned him the reputation as the worst acquisition in the history of the Red Devils.

Maguire’s £80 million transfer fee, which is still a world record for a defender, has propelled him into the same conversation despite a staggering decline from his first two seasons with the club.

But both signatures shared one characteristic. United prevailed over Manchester City in the competition for their signatures.
Cucurella, like Maguire and Sanchez, struggled last season after City’s defeat and has fallen out of Mauricio Pochettino’s favor.

But Erik ten Hag believes he is a suitable fit for his system, and the 25-year-old is reportedly interested in joining his upcoming project.

United has prioritized an emergency left-back following Luke Shaw’s injury-related absence, which could last until at least November.

And Cucurella is at the top of Ten Hag’s shortlist, which also includes Marcos Alonso, Sergio Reguilon, and Nicolas Tagliafico, among others.
Wednesday, following Chelsea’s 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over League Two AFC Wimbledon, Pochettino remained tight-lipped about Cucurella’s future.

“I have no knowledge. When queried about the Spaniard, Pochettino said, “Perhaps you know him better than I do.”

“All of the athletes who train with us on a daily basis are included in our plans.

“And then, as you know, things occur because the decision is made by both parties, the player and the institution. If something occurs within the next few days, we will notify you.”

Ten Hag is also interested in signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on Transfer Deadline Day. Cucurella may not be the only player to join United on this day.
