Liverpool passed Nunez injury update
Jurgen Klopp has a new injury concern ahead of Liverpool’s return to action, as Darwin Nunez is questionable for the Reds’ match at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Saturday morning finds Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool traveling to Molineux for the Premier League weekend opener.
Nunez started in the forward position for both of Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers this week, but was substituted at halftime during their loss to Ecuador.
The manager of Uruguay, Marcelo Bielsa, informed the media after the game that Nunez was substituted due to muscular discomfort.
Bielsa added that Nunez’s early substitution was due to his incapacity to keep up with the team’s press due to the lingering issue.
Given Liverpool’s aggressive style of play, which is primarily centered on high pressing, Klopp will have to make a decision.
Nunez replaced Cody Gakpo in the starting lineup against Aston Villa after scoring twice off the substitute in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Newcastle United.
Gakpo is the most probable candidate to return, as he scored in both of the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 qualifiers this week and has been in fine form.
Diogo Jota also scored for Portugal to make his claim for a starting position, scoring two of Portugal’s nine goals in their 9-0 rout of Luxembourg.
In addition to Nunez’s injury, three other Liverpool players were on international duty in South America this week.
Alisson, Alexis Mac Allister, and Luis Diaz will also be evaluated following their participation in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying on Tuesday night.
In recent years, it has become common for players returning late from international obligations on the continent to commence on the bench.
Losing at least three more players from the outset would leave Liverpool extremely depleted before their return to league play.
Virgil van Dijk will be absent after he had his one-match ban extended because of improper conduct following his sending off against Newcastle.
Both Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold withdrew from their respective national teams due to injury shortly before their scheduled meeting.
While Konate is hopeful to return, Alexander-Arnold may miss the travel to Wolves after being removed with 20 minutes remaining in the first half against Aston Villa.
Klopp verified that the right-back was forced off due to a minor hamstring injury, but scan results have not been disclosed, so Alexander-Arnold’s status is currently uncertain.
