While Newcastle United supporters are ecstatic about Sandro Tonali’s arrival, the club began the summer transfer window by pursuing another Italian.

Prior to Tonali, it was his compatriot Nicolo Barella.

Newcastle attempted to acquire the Inter Milan midfielder in pursuit of a deal that would have made a clear statement of intent.

However, it became immediately apparent that a transfer was not possible. Inter Milan desired £80 million, £30 million more than what Newcastle was willing to pay.

Eddie Howe was eager to collaborate with Barella, but the sentiment was not shared. He desired to remain in Italy, so Newcastle had to look elsewhere. This led them to Tonali, and the rest, as they say, is history.

While Newcastle was unable to acquire Barella, another Premier League team will attempt to sign him.

City of Manchester has an interest in Nicolo Barella.

According to 90min, Manchester City is scouting potential replacements for Bernardo Silva if he decides to depart the club this summer.

The report indicates that Barella is a possibility, with 90min alleging that Man City have begun efforts to sign the 26-year-old. However, he reportedly remains unavailable.

This is likely encouraging for Newcastle, as neither Man City nor Inter can entice him to leave. It’s not that he didn’t want Newcastle; he’s simply unwilling to leave Italy.

It is also indicative of the caliber of player the Magpies sought to acquire. He is a special talent who, according to Man City, could do a job at the Etihad. Considering how dominant they were last season when they won the treble, this statement speaks volumes.

Barella’s capture by Newcastle would have been spectacular, but it was not to be. Man City now appears to be experiencing the same issue and will need to turn elsewhere for a solution.

Newcastle did exactly that, acquiring Tonali, who already appears to be the genuine deal.
