Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher concur that Liverpool is more likely than Arsenal to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League championship next season.

The Gunners were once eight points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side, but after collecting just six of a possible 15 points in April, they ceded first place to the defending champions.

Despite spending 248 days in first place, north London has lost sight of the league championship. In fact, no team in the English Premier League has ever led the table for an extended period of time without going on to claim the championship.

Neville stated on the Monday Night Football program on Sky Sports that he hopes Arsenal can maintain their form into next season, but he identified Liverpool as their most formidable rival.

The former Manchester United defender believes Jurgen Klopp’s squad will rebound from their disappointing season.

Neville stated, “I was recently asked who the most likely challenger was.” “Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is the only team that has proven they can run them close and that I could trust, but I’m not confident about that because I believe they’ve regressed significantly since the last time they had a bad season.

“I hope that when other teams see Manchester City, they don’t feel guilty for themselves and instead wonder how they can reach that level. Liverpool, led by Jurgen Klopp, is the only club that has proven they can actually do it after three seasons.

“Arsenal lived with them for 30 games this season, so let’s hope it can happen, because I don’t believe into this pessimism that we might as well all go home. I believe that the other clubs are spending enough money to have a chance, but City has the best manager.

“However, I must say that Jurgen Klopp’s performance at Liverpool is on par with Pep Guardiola’s given Liverpool’s net spend of around £200 million over five or six years.”

Then, when posed the same question, Carragher responded, “I’ll choose Liverpool and Manchester United. I believe Liverpool will return, but I concur with Gary [Neville] that the jump in terms of truly challenging Man City may be a bit too great; it may also be too great for Manchester United.

“However, I do notice those two squads. Where Manchester United is headed, they appear to be very secure. They must acquire a few offensive players and score more goals if they are to improve their performance.

“Liverpool will reinvest in midfielders, and they have players who have won the most prestigious trophies, so I’d say Liverpool and Manchester United.”
