Wout Weghorst is expected to leave Manchester United this summer, regardless of whether Erik ten Hag intends to acquire him on a permanent basis or not.

The towering forward transferred to Old Trafford on loan from Burnley in January, via Besiktas, where he had previously been on loan.

Weghorst, who was signed as a temporary replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, expressed his pride in joining the Red Devils.

Despite having scored one of the most inventive goals of the 2022 World Cup, Weghorst has been unable to replicate his early-season form in Turkey in the Premier League.

In fact, he tallied nine goals in 18 games for the Super League club before joining Old Trafford. Despite frequent selection by Ten Hag, Weghorst has scored only two goals in 27 career appearances.

This summer, United manager Ten Hag intends to make another significant transfer investment, focusing primarily on acquiring a new No. 9. In this regard, players like Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, and Goncalo Ramos will be linked.

And despite the fact that the acquisition of a top-tier striker will relegate Weghorst to the bench, the club is reportedly still interested in signing him as a squad player. Consequently, Ten Hag evidently admires the 30-year-old celebrity.

Rio Ferdinand, who has named four Manchester United players who will be angered by Weghorst’s regular participation, has been baffled by his consistent selection.

However, Weghorst maintains he would gladly remain if given the chance and if Ten Hag made him feel wanted.

Recently, he told The Times, “If the club wants to keep me, I’ll need to know what role they have in mind for me.”

Weghorst is favored to leave Manchester United and join PSV.
Regardless of Ten Hag’s decision regarding his future, Weghorst is expected to reject the opportunity to remain with United.

And Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen believes the striker will transfer instead to PSV Eindhoven.

Driessen believes Weghorst will be much more well-liked in his native country due to his time playing under United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Voetbal Nieuws quotes Weghorst as saying on the Kick Off podcast, “If you want goals guaranteed, you need Weghorst.”

“You still have Luuk de Jong, but they want Lauritsen as well. I don’t know what will happen to De Jong, but if you want a large, headstrong striker who can accomplish a lot in the sixteen, I would choose Weghorst.

“At AZ, he was nearly the leading scorer for the Netherlands, and he is now a seasoned and regular international. I believe he would fit in well at PSV.

“I do not know whether he wishes to return to the Netherlands. But if Feyenoord and PSV qualify for the Champions League, it would be fantastic to play there.”

Weghorst is under contract with Burnley until the summer of 2025, but he is unlikely to play in the Premier League for the Clarets.

As a consequence, they will be willing to sell Weghorst on Transfermarkt for approximately €14 million.
