Man Utd told him to make ‘him’ captain as the defender has something the rest of the squad don’t
Five minutes after his return to Manchester United, fans are already clamoring for Jonny Evans to be named captain.
This week, the veteran defender made an unexpected return to Old Trafford after signing a short-term contract enabling him to participate in the club’s preseason tour.

Erik ten Hag is anticipated to name a new first team captain in the coming days after shockingly stripping Harry Maguire of the armband. Although Bruno Fernandes is the odds-on favorite to receive the nod, social media users believe Evans is the superior candidate for one very important reason.
“Only Jonny Evans in the squad has a Premier League championship medal. Now that he is the undisputed leader of the locker room, award him the captain’s armband,” one fan tweeted.
A rival fan added, “They should make Evans captain because he knows how to win the Premier League, unlike those other losers.”
The fact that Jonny Evans is the most decorated Premier League player in that locker room is giving me the chuckles, according to another member of the squad.
United had two Premier League champions (Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea) on their roster at the outset of the previous season, but both players have since departed.
It was the first time since 1992 that the Red Devils were without a Premier League/First Division champion between the departure of David de Gea and the advent of Jonny Evans.
During his initial tenure with the club, Evans made just under 200 appearances. He graduated from the academy in 2006 and spent the subsequent two seasons on loan before obtaining a semi-regular spot on Sir Alex Ferguson’s team in 2008.
He moved to West Brom in 2015 and then to Leicester three years later, where he played regular first-team football for both clubs. One month after Leicester’s relegation to the Championship, he departed the King Power Stadium in June after his contract expired.
The 36-year-old is anticipated to train with United’s U21 side over the next few weeks as he mulls over his next move. However, it is believed that Ten Hag and his team have been so impressed by his performances in training that they are considering him for their upcoming first team friendlies.
