Manchester United player won more duels than any Premier League right-back player last season

Despite a few setbacks, Diogo Dalot has had an outstanding season, as evidenced by a report on the official Manchester United website.

This season, he made 41 appearances, which is nearly double the total number of appearances he has made in previous seasons. However, what is most remarkable is that he has become the Premier League’s most successful duelist in his position.

Dalot has adapted notably well to life under Erik ten Hag. Ironically, he would have likely seen even more game time if it weren’t for the fact that his right-back adversary, Aaron Wan Bissaka, has done the same, creating a season-long battle for the right-back position.

United recently gave Dalot a long-term contract, so he appears to have won the longer-term contest.
Undoubtedly, this is due in part to the fact that he has excelled in one-on-one duels, capturing an astounding 66% of them.

This places him first among the best five duelists in the league, ahead of Joel Veltman, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Kieran Tripper.

Intriguingly, Dalot also outperformed his United fullback counterparts in other crucial areas, which may explain in part why the club wants to retain him.

The 24-year-old made 54 key passes and contributed 1.71 crosses per game on average, which is more than any other United fullback did throughout the entire season.

In his own half, he completed 19 accurate passes per game, up from 15.1 per game in the previous season.

Similarly, he has contributed 18.3 accurate passes per game in the opposing half this season, an increase from 17.3 per game last season.

Typically, Erik ten Hag prefers defenders who are adept with the ball.

This requirement is especially stringent for United’s full-backs, who are required to move into the midfield whenever they possess the ball.

United fullbacks will need ball-playing skills such as a wide passing range and the ability to play key passes from withdrawn positions to integrate into his teams.

Dalot is well-suited for this position, and if he can improve his defensive consistency, he has a strong chance of becoming Manchester United’s long-term starting right back.
