Martin Odegaard is nearing a new level of Arsenal leadership as Mikel Arteta’s plan continues to flourish.
Arsenal continues to negotiate a new contract with Martin Odegaard and his representatives. The club and Mikel Arteta view the Norwegian as a dream candidate for club commander, as reported in May, and discussions have progressed since then, according to football.london.
After leaving Real Madrid in 2021 in quest of stability, which he has found in north London, the midfielder is extremely pleased with his current position and role. Last season, he scored 15 goals from open play, tying Kevin De Bruyne’s record for the position. Mikel Arteta has helped him develop and realize the potential seen in him as an adolescent.
After the departure of Alexandre Lacazette, who inherited the insignia from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arteta gave him the captaincy. Odegaard has frequently been perceived as having a coach-like presence on the field, similar to Oleksandr Zinchenko.
He exemplifies his coach’s style with quick but thoughtful passing, incisiveness, threat, and the potential to score from multiple positions on the field. As he has matured within the group, he is seen frequently whipping up the crowd and providing vocal leadership.
When I interviewed Martin Odegaard for Thesoccerstand.com following Arsenal’s 4-2 victory over Brighton at the Amex Stadium on New Year’s Eve, I inquired about his relationship with his teammates. It’s evident that something has altered since last season.
“I believe I speak when I feel compelled to,” he explained. “I am always trying to do my best for the team.”On the pitch, I’m experiencing the game so I’m very into the game and very focused on the game. I simply strive to do my best for the team and assist everyone as much as I can.”
Odegaard is much more vocally noticeable in today’s contests than he was during his first few months as club captain. New teammates such as Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, and Jurrien Timber have been observed conversing with Odegaard off-camera and on the field as he attempts to fulfill his manager’s desires.
During the Tony Adams era, the captain was known for being a leader in perhaps more apparent ways, whereas today it is much more subtle. Odegaard has embraced the club’s values and history, and he wears the jersey with full knowledge of them, thanks to his manager, who has obviously molded the 24-year-old in a very particular manner.
