Phil Foden is one of the greatest attacking players Pep Guardiola has ever seen, and he displayed these skills against Newcastle.

Foden wasn’t at his best in this week’s City Super Cup victory over Sevilla due to Kevin De Bruyne’s absence, but he was much better against Newcastle when supported by Julian Alvarez at the summit of midfield.

Foden provided the assist on the game-winning goal scored by Alvarez.

And after dismissing questions about Foden’s prospects of replacing De Bruyne in the City squad over the next few months, Guardiola was effusive in his praise for his forward’s Man of the Match performance.

However, Guardiola also stated that Alvarez and Mateo Kovacic are capable of featuring in the attacking midfield position, before challenging Foden to continue improving this week.

“Phil can play all forward positions,” said Guardiola. “He has incredible ability between the lines; the way he turns and attacks the last lines is among the best I’ve ever witnessed.”

Every control he knows precisely where the objective is. Neither two nor three strokes are necessary. He is in the ideal position to assault the goal with a single move.

“We believed we could find him based on how Newcastle defends.” After utilizing the speed of Julian and Erling [Haaland] and the caliber of our players, we attempted to fill that position.

Kovacic should play this position more defensively than offensively. Managers tailor their abilities to the players and issues at hand.Phil I am aware of his proficiency in that position. How well he has played as a striker, right flank, and left winger!”

In general, Guardiola was pleased with his team’s mentality, but he insisted there was more to come in terms of fluidity and cadence following a rocky start to the season.

He stated, “I am pleased, as I believe it is returning. Still, we are not at our best, and we must take a step, but this is perfectly normal. The most difficult period we have endured. Today, the greatest difference is the team that has shown me or the Premier League, but we are still willing to give it another shot. To defeat Sheffield United is the objective.”
