RB Leipzig star speaks out with motivational message despite ‘amid Chelsea transfer ‘guarantee’

Christopher Nkunku appears to have bid farewell to his RB Leipzig supporters via a social media post made by the Frenchman. This summer, the 25-year-old is expected to join Chelsea, though no official announcement has been made.

Nkunku scored the opening goal in what is expected to be his penultimate game for the club, as Borussia Dortmund defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the German Cup penultimate on Saturday. While supporters of both Chelsea and Leipzig are aware of his situation, neither club has made an official announcement.

When queried last week about Nkunku’s impending departure to London, Leipzig’s sporting director Max Eberl was evasive, merely responding, “He could be.” Only in January did he acknowledge, “The signs are very, very clear that he will be joining Chelsea.”

Now, the player has taken this to the next level, effectively saying goodbye to the Leipzig faithful. Bundesliga’s leading scorer posted on Instagram, “So good to have shared these moments with you all [red heart, white heart]”

After 172 games, he leaves on a high note, having tallied 16 goals in an injury-plagued season. In spite of this, nobody in Germany scored more goals than he did, and his team finished third with six assists, five points behind Bayern Munich’s league-winning 71 points.

It was Nkunku’s performance in the 2021/22 season that drew the attention of Europe’s top clubs. With 20 goals and 15 assists, he erupted onto the market and began to receive inquiries about his summer availability. Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea were among the interested clubs, but their pursuit was thwarted when he signed a new four-year contract.

Three months later, the Blues reached an agreement with Leipzig on a £52 million ($64.4 million) pre-contract that would see him join the club this summer. Since then, many changes have occurred, including the dismissal of Tuchel, the departure of Graham Potter, and the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as the manager of Nkunku.

Despite the changes at SW6, supporters are thrilled to see a player of Nkunku’s caliber join the club, particularly after years of offensive struggles.
