Record for the MOST Champions League goals scored in a single season
The two best seasons in the history of European club football are both held by Cristiano Ronaldo.
His record from the 2013/14 season, in which he scored 17 goals in 11 matches and played 993 minutes as Real Madrid won the championship, still stands after nearly a decade.
Ronaldo scored in every match he appeared in with the exception of the first 73 minutes of their semifinal match against Bayern.
He began the Champions League with a hat-trick against Galatasaray and scored doubles against FC Copenhagen, Juventus, Schalke (twice), and Bayern Munich.
He well almost repeated that incredible great achievement just two seasons later, scoring 16 goals as Madrid won the title for the third time.
During the group stage, he scored hat-tricks against Shakhtar Donetsk and Wolfsburg, in addition to a four-goal blitz against Malmo.
In that year, Ronaldo scored ‘only’ five goals in the knockout stage, having exerted the majority of his energy in the easier group stage.
In the semifinals and championship, he was held scoreless, but Madrid still won the trophy.
Ironically, Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final in both seasons, requiring extra time in one instance and a penalty shootout in the other.
Messi had his best season in 2011/12, scoring 14 goals as Barcelona reached the semifinals before losing to Chelsea.
For whom FIFA’s Goal of the Season award is named, Jose Altafini, Gerd ‘Der Bomber’ Muller, and Ferenc Puskas are also on the list.
