Maddison was permitted to depart Leicester City following their relegation from the Premier League last season, and Spurs won the race to sign him in June by agreeing to a £40 million transfer fee with the Foxes.

Maddison has made an immediate impact at Spurs with two goals and two assists in his first four Premier League games this season, making the transfer appear to be one of the finest deals of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea, meanwhile, was in the market for a creative spark this summer but decided against pursuing Maddison.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea’s transfer strategy this summer was to acquire players aged 25 or younger, which precluded a proposal for Maddison, who will be 27 in November.

Saturday, Maddison scored a fine goal in Spurs’ 5-2 victory over Burnley. After the game, Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou praised the midfielder’s influence on and off the field.

Postcoglou stated, “I’ve only recently gotten to know him as a person, but he’s a very strong, resilient individual.”

He enjoys not being targeted, but he wants the ball and he wants to be in those situations; he possesses this quality.I believed that today was a true tribute to Sonny, Madders, and Romero.

They all scored, but those three I’ve thrust into leadership positions, and the way they’ve embraced that responsibility not only with words but also with actions, not just on game day but on a daily basis, is as encouraging to me as anything else, because as fantastic players as they are individually, they’ve all embraced the team ethic.

Madders is among these. I believe that his willingness to work hard for the team is a wonderful example of his creativity and effectiveness in front of goal.’
