Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane is expected to depart Bayern Munich this summer, with Manchester United emerging as a surprise suitor.

Mane was acquired by Bayern Munich from Anfield for £35.1 million last summer. The veteran forward left the Merseyside club after six trophy-laden seasons after making it plain he desired a new challenge.
The Senegalese star scored 120 goals in 269 appearances for Liverpool and won six major trophies during his tenure with Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have struggled to adjust to life without the consistently excellent forward.

However, things have not gone according to plan for the Bayern forward. The 31-year-old returned to action after being suspended by the German champions for a Bundesliga match last month for allegedly striking teammate Leroy Sane after their 3-0 Champions League loss at Manchester City.

In addition to a hefty sanction, the ex-Reds forward was suspended for Bayern’s Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena. Due to form and fitness concerns, Mane has struggled to establish himself as a regular in the club’s attack with Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Thomas Muller as competition.

While he labored with consistency under his former manager Julian Nagelsmann, his fortunes have not improved under Thomas Tuchel. According to Sky Sport Germany, the forward has no future at the club and will be transferred this summer after playing only six minutes during the weekend victory over Schalke.

Only Premier League clubs are likely to be able to afford the experienced forward, but Liverpool is unlikely to sign him due to the recent arrivals of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

According to similar reports in Germany, Manchester United and Newcastle are the two clubs most likely to sign Mane. The Senegalese forward revealed in an interview last year that he had an agreement to join Manchester United in 2016 prior to Liverpool’s pursuit of him.

Mane disclosed to the Daily Telegraph that he was extremely close to joining Manchester United. “There, I had the contract. I had attained unanimity. It was complete, but I decided to visit Liverpool instead.I was persuaded to support Jurgen Klopp’s initiative. I recall the first time I received a phone call from Klopp. He stated, “We have a large project in Liverpool, and I want you to be involved.”

“Then he inquired as to what position I desired because he saw an opening at Southampton.” Previously, I played on the left side, but I now play on the right. I stated that I favor the left side, and he responded, “But (Philippe) Coutinho plays on the left!” Therefore, I decided to perform on the right. I could envision myself in each position.”

United intends to strengthen their attack this summer by acquiring a prominent central striker and making additional additions. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho’s futures are uncertain, while Amad is likely to contribute after a successful loan stint with Sunderland.
