Kaoru Mitoma could become Manchester City’s next Riyad Mahrez if the club secures a transfer for him.

Manchester United have a history of acquiring players from other Premier League clubs, as they did with Mahrez when they purchased him from Leicester City in 2018 for £60 million.

Now that the winger has ended his time at the Etihad Stadium and joined Al-Ahli for £30 million, the Citizens have the opportunity to not only acquire a replacement for Mahrez, but also to continue their record of signing premier-league players.

Mitoma could be the next Mahrez for City.

It was reported earlier this month that the three-time champions are interested in acquiring Mitoma from Brighton & Hove Albion.

In 41 appearances across all competitions, the 26-year-old scored 10 goals and dished out eight assists during the previous campaign.

During City’s recent preseason tour of Asia, Pep Guardiola identified Mitoma as one of his favorite Asian players and described him as “incredible” for Brighton last year.

Brighton CEO Paul Barber described the Japanese international as a “exciting” player, as he finished the previous Premier League season with more carries into the penalty area (85) and more goal-creating actions (15) than any other player at the club.

This demonstrates how forward-thinking and inventive he is and why he would be a suitable replacement for Mahrez, given how valuable he has been to City in terms of scoring and assisting goals over the years.

Mitoma may have to demonstrate versatility if he wants to be a regular fixture at the Etihad Stadium, given that Brighton’s star primarily operated on the left side of the field, whereas Mahrez played on the right.
